Samra Food

Samra Food sells dates to customers who read and buy in Arabic, and an online store that treats Arabic as a translation layer asks those customers to shop in someone else’s language. The brand also had no settled look to build against, so the store could not simply be styled from an existing identity.

One person planned, designed, built and handed over the whole thing, which is how the store, the brand direction and the admin behind them stayed consistent with each other.

• Set the brand direction first, so the store had an identity to be designed against rather than decorated with.
• Designed the storefront in Arabic and in English as one layout, mirrored rather than translated, so neither script reads as the afterthought.
• Built the catalogue, the cart, the checkout and the admin behind them.
• Handed over the code and the accounts, so the brand owns what it paid for.

These are the two sides of the same storefront. Switch between them: the layout mirrors, the reading order flips, and the store reads as though it was written in whichever language you chose. That is what Taimera means by bilingual, and it is the part that is easiest to claim and hardest to fake.
